Response to news articles: Imported dogs 'posing risk to UK'

As a dedicated and ethical animal rescue, we want to address the serious concerns highlighted in the news today, regarding imported rescue dogs and the associated risks of behavioural issues and disease. We are committed to upholding the highest standards in all our operations.

The examples detailed in the article underscore the critical importance of responsible and transparent rescue practices. The "Deliveroo for dogs" model, where animals are delivered to homes without proper assessment is not only irresponsible but, as shown, can have tragic consequences.

Our organisation operates with the highest standards because we believe it is the only way to ensure the welfare of the animals we rescue and the safety of the families who adopt them.

This includes:

  • Thorough Health Checks and Quarantine: All dogs entering our care undergo comprehensive veterinary examinations, vaccinations, and appropriate quarantine periods to prevent the spread of disease. We conduct rigorous testing for known risks, including Brucella canis, and will never knowingly place a sick animal.

  • Comprehensive Behavioural Assessments: Our experienced team conducts in-depth behavioural assessments of every dog. Our dedicated volunteers even visit Romania in person to assess dogs individually where they can, which involves observing their interactions, understanding their history (where known), and identifying any potential challenges. This allows us to create accurate profiles and match them with suitable adopters.

  • Rigorous Adopter Vetting and Matching: We employ a multi-step adoption process that goes far beyond a short phone call or video check. This includes detailed application forms and thorough home checks. We prioritise matching the right dog with the right home, considering lifestyle, experience, and living environment.

  • Adoption Transition: We believe in responsible rehoming. We provide ongoing post-adoption support and guidance to ensure a successful transition for both the dog and the family. We are always available to offer advice and support should any challenges arise. If the adopter is unable to keep their dog due to unforeseen circumstances, we offer full rescue backup for the lifetime of the dog.

  • Transparent and Ethical Practices: We maintain meticulous records for every animal, detailing their origin, health status, and behavioural observations. We operate with full transparency, adhering to all relevant laws and best practices for animal welfare and importation.

We are committed to our role in ensuring animal welfare and public safety, and we will continue to uphold the highest standards in all our rescue and rehoming efforts.
