Dogs and Fireworks

The sound of fireworks can be traumatic and terrifying for many dogs and it's difficult to get away from them at this time of year.

Here are some tips to help your dog cope with Bonfire Night:

  • Take your dog for a long walk before any fireworks start, allowing lots of time for sniffing

  • Create a safe, secure hiding place inside that's away from windows and doors

  • Provide something to chew on - a stuffed Kong or puzzle toy is ideal

  • Close all curtains and put lights on in the house

  • Ask your vet about calming medication if you know your dog struggles

  • Feed your dog earlier as a stressed dog often won't eat

  • Be there for them. Give them comfort and reassurance in a calm way without making too much of a fuss

  • Accept that your dog's fear is real and traumatic for them

Did you know?

The smell in the air before, during and after fireworks can also alter your dog's behaviour. They may not have seen or heard any fireworks, but the smell will stay in the air and affect them.

Special broadcast

Classic FM have partnered with the RSPCA to broadcast a special bonfire night program to help animals cope with firework noise.

This will be broadcast on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November from 5 to 9pm.
